CHAPTER 11

AFTER KIRA ORDERED everyone to leave, Seven gathered her padd and a special data disk and went directly to the transporter room of the Siren’s Song. She requested permission to beam aboard B’Elanna’s ship.

Kira’s terrible reaction indicated that the situation could change. Seven had seen Troi’s name among the former agents who held gaming licenses. Because of link in the stardates, Kira must have assumed the licenses had something to do with the assassination attempt.

Seven considered Kira’s behavior to be irrational; first accepting Seven into her inner circle then seeking a relationship with Deanna Troi, when both had been involved in Winn’s assassination plot. It made no sense, yet her Obsidian Order training had taught Seven that people often pursued the very thing that would bring about their destruction.

It took only a matter of moments for Seven to receive permission to transport. It was a testament to her growing friendship with B’Elanna. She had been spending most of her free time on board the Sitio. Often she engaged in hand-to-hand combat simulations with B’Elanna, or they talked, usually about Worf and things that were happening in the Klingon territory. B’Elanna got regular reports about the ritual ceremonies as Gowron was formally made High Chancellor. She sometimes seemed wistful about not being on Qo’noS.

Their friendship had first warmed, ironically enough, when Seven made an off-color remark about Kira’s growing fascination with Deanna Troi. It was while they were still orbiting Alpha Centauri Six, when Troi and Kira went to the magnificent planetarium together to experience the complex holo-environment. When B’Elanna said that Worf would soon leave Klingon territory, Seven had muttered something about a ménage A Troi.

B’Elanna had sputtered with laughter. “It wouldn’t be the first time! Worf may love women, but he only trusts Deanna Troi. Kira won’t be around for long. I’ve seen it before.”

Seven admired B’Elanna’s ability to be a loyal friend to both Worf and Troi in spite of her absolute hatred of Kira. B’Elanna seemed to appreciate Seven’s grasp of the situation.

Now, as Seven materialized on board B’Elanna’s flagship, she felt as if she were unfurling from a cramped and uncomfortable confinement. She could finally drop the subservient, admiring attitude that Kira demanded of her. No one on board the Sitio ever ordered her to smile or to relax, as Kira did.

In B’Elanna’s company, Seven felt as if she was finally discovering her own true nature. At least she was expressing her own impulses and desires. The cloying confusion that had stifled every thought was brushed aside by something clear and honest. She could be brusque with B’Elanna, who was never offended by her short answers or precise assessments. They sometimes argued over issues of production, supply and demand, which occupied much of B’Elanna’s time as well Seven’s. Yet they could also sit for an hour on end in companionable silence.

Seven knew that Enabran Tain would say she was weakened by her sincere regard for B’Elanna. But she trusted the Klingon-Terran, and paradoxically that made her feel stronger.
